Coolants vs. Antifreeze: What's the Difference?

Learn the difference between coolants and antifreeze, why it matters, and how to choose the right formula to protect your engine and cooling system. 

Short answer: They’re essentially the same thing!

“Antifreeze” refers to the concentrated product, while “coolant” is the diluted, ready-to-use mixture in your vehicle’s cooling system.

Antifreeze concentrate—typically 95–100% ethylene glycol or propylene glycol—must be mixed with distilled water (commonly 50/50). Coolant is the working fluid that circulates through the engine to regulate temperature and prevent corrosion. Both contain additives that are designed for specific engine technologies.


Don’t Rely on Color Alone

While coolant colors can help identify the type, manufacturers use different dyes, and some universal coolants are tinted to match OEM colors. Always confirm the chemical formulation to ensure proper compatibility.

Common Coolant Types:

  • IAT (Green): Inorganic Acid Technology with silicates. Short life—2–3 years/30,000 miles.
     
  • OAT (Orange/Red): Organic Acid Technology, no silicates, extended life—5 years/150,000 miles.
     
  • HOAT (Red/Pink): Hybrid Organic Acid Technology combining IAT and OAT benefits—5 years/150,000 miles.
     
  • European (Blue/Purple): Phosphate-free OAT for BMW, Mercedes, VW—5 years/150,000 miles.
     
  • Asian (Blue/Green): Phosphate-enhanced OAT for Honda, Toyota, Nissan—5 years/100,000 miles.
     

How Each Coolant Works

  • IAT (Green): Uses silicates and phosphates to create a protective layer on metal surfaces. Additives deplete quickly—frequent changes required. 

  • OAT (Orange/Red): Uses organic acids for a thinner, longer-lasting protective layer.
     
  • HOAT (Red/Pink): Combines organic acids with traditional inhibitors for wider compatibility.
